Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 cups yellow onions, chopped
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 tsp dried thyme)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1/2 cup plain dry breadcrumbs
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 2 pounds ground beef (80/20)
- 1/2 cup ketchup (plus extra for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium-low. Add onions, salt, pepper, and thyme. Cook until onions are soft and translucent (about 10 minutes). Stir in Worcestershire sauce and let cool slightly.
- In a large bowl, mix the breadcrumbs and milk. Let sit for 5 minutes.
- Add the eggs, beef, ketchup, and cooked onions to the bowl. Mix gently until just combined.
- Shape the mixture into a loaf on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Spread a generous layer of ketchup over the top.
- Bake for 1 to 1 hour and 15 minutes, until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
- Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
