Description

Onions are a Southern-inspired baked dish featuring thick-sliced sweet onions layered in a casserole dish, drenched with butter, seasoned to perfection, and topped with a bubbly, golden cheese blend. Comforting, cheesy, and incredibly simple, this side dish brings bold flavor with minimal effort.

Ingredients

  • 3 large sweet onions (Vidalia or similar), sliced into 1/2 inch rounds
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 baking dish.
  2. Slice sweet onions into 1/2-inch thick rounds, keeping the rings intact.
  3. Arrange onion slices in a single or slightly overlapping layer in the dish.
  4. Season evenly with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  5. Drizzle melted butter over the onions, letting it seep between the layers.
  6. Top evenly with shredded cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheeses.
  7. Bake uncovered for 30–40 minutes, or until onions are tender and cheese is golden and bubbly.
  8. Let cool slightly before serving.
