Description

These Sour Cream Sugar Cookies are the ultimate soft sugar cookie treat—perfect for holiday parties, bake sales, or when you just need a comforting dessert. Made with rich sour cream for extra tenderness, these cookies have a delicate crumb and a light tang that sets them apart from traditional sugar cookies. Topped with fluffy vanilla frosting and festive sprinkles, they’re easy to customize for any season. Ideal for anyone searching for a quick dessert, fun baking activity, or easy recipe for a cookie exchange. These are also fantastic food ideas for party trays or edible gifts!

Ingredients

2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup full-fat sour cream

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

2 cups powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 to 3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk

Pinch of salt

Festive sprinkles

Instructions

1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

2. In a large mixing bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

3. Add the egg and vanilla extract. Mix until fully incorporated.

4. Add sour cream and mix until smooth. Do not overmix.

5. Gradually add the dry mixture into the wet ingredients. Mix just until combined.

6. Chill dough for 30 to 60 minutes if time allows.

7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment.

8. Scoop and roll dough into 1–1.5 tbsp balls. Flatten gently.

9. Bake 8–10 minutes, until edges are set. Let cool on a wire rack.

10. For frosting, beat butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar, vanilla, and cream. Mix until fluffy.

11. Frost cooled cookies generously and add sprinkles while frosting is soft.

Notes

For best texture, use full-fat sour cream—low-fat will change the final result.

Don’t overbake. The cookies should not brown; they stay soft and pale.

If making ahead, freeze cookies without frosting for longer freshness.
