Ingredients

1 tube refrigerated crescent roll dough

1 pound breakfast sausage

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 1/2 cups whole milk

1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 tablespoon butter (optional, for brushing crust)

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out crescent dough on a greased baking sheet, pressing seams together and forming a slight crust edge.

2. In a skillet, cook sausage over medium heat until browned and cooked through. Reserve about 1 tablespoon of the drippings in the pan.

3. Add flour to the pan and stir to coat the sausage. Cook for 1 minute to form a roux.

4. Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

5. Spread sausage gravy evenly over the crescent dough base.

6. Top with shredded cheddar cheese and a few extra sausage crumbles if desired.

7. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until crust is golden and cheese is melted and bubbly.

8. Let rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Use freshly shredded cheese for optimal melting and flavor.

You can prep the sausage gravy a day ahead for quicker assembly.

Brushing the crust with melted butter right after baking adds a beautiful golden finish.
