  • Author: Zoe McKenney
  • Total Time: 6 hours 50 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Description

This rich and creamy French toast combines silky custard-soaked bread with a caramelized sugar topping for a decadent breakfast treat. Perfect for brunch gatherings or special occasions, it can be prepared the night before for a stress-free morning.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread, sliced 1-inch thick
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 cup half-and-half
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • Maple syrup, fresh fruits, or powdered sugar for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Custard Mixture: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, half-and-half, milk, 1/2 cup sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir in cinnamon if desired.
  2. Arrange the Bread: Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with melted butter. Arrange bread slices in a single layer.
  3. Soak the Bread: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread. Gently press the bread down to ensure it absorbs the liquid. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  4. Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the dish from the fridge and let it sit for 20-30 minutes. Bake uncovered for 35-40 minutes until golden and set.
  5. Caramelize the Sugar Topping: Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of sugar over the baked toast. Use a blowtorch to caramelize the sugar or place the dish under the broiler for 2-3 minutes until bubbly and golden.
  6. Serve: Let cool slightly before slicing. Enjoy with maple syrup, fresh fruits, or powdered sugar.
