Description

This Overnight Crème Brûlée French Toast is a decadent, make-ahead breakfast that combines the creamy texture of custard with a caramelized, buttery base. Soaked overnight in a rich mixture of eggs, cream, and vanilla, then baked until golden and bubbling, it’s perfect for brunch, holidays, or any special morning.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons corn syrup (optional)
  • 1 loaf brioche or challah, sliced 3/4 to 1 inch thick
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar and corn syrup until smooth and bubbling.
  2. Pour the caramel mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  3. Arrange the bread slices in a single layer over the caramel, slightly overlapping if needed.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream, milk, vanilla, and salt until smooth.
  5. Pour the custard evenly over the bread. Press the bread gently to help it absorb the liquid.
  6. Cover the dish tightly and refrigerate overnight.
  7. In the morning, preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove dish from refrigerator.
  8. Bake uncovered for 35 to 45 minutes, until the top is golden and the custard is mostly set.
  9. Let rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Spoon servings upside-down to highlight the caramel base.
