Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 12 oz dried spaghetti
  • Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onion and sauté until soft, about 5–7 minutes.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Add ground beef and pork; cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon.
  5. Stir in tomato paste and cook for 2–3 minutes.
  6. Pour in red wine, scraping up any browned bits.
  7. Add crushed tomatoes, salt, pepper, oregano, basil, sugar, and bay leaf.
  8. Bring to a simmer, reduce heat, and cook uncovered for 45–90 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  9. While the sauce simmers, cook spaghetti in salted water until al dente. Drain.
  10. Remove bay leaf from sauce.
  11. Toss cooked spaghetti with some of the sauce.
  12. Serve with extra sauce on top and grated Parmesan cheese.
