  • Author: Sara McKenney
  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Description

A classic Southern dessert made with juicy blackberries, a buttery self-forming crust, and just the right amount of sweetness. This old-fashioned blackberry cobbler is baked to golden perfection and best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (divided: 1/2 cup for berries, 1/2 cup for batter)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Place the butter in a 9×13-inch baking dish and put it in the oven to melt while preheating.
  3. In a bowl, mix the blackberries with 1/2 cup of sugar. Let them sit while preparing the batter.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, remaining 1/2 cup of sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Stir in the milk until the batter is smooth.
  6. Once the butter is melted, remove the dish from the oven. Pour the batter evenly over the melted butter. Do not stir.
  7. Spoon the blackberries and their juices evenly over the batter. Do not stir.
  8. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  9. Let it cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.
