They are golden brown on the outside, tender on the inside, and easy to make with simple ingredients. Whether fried or baked, these donuts will bring warmth and love to your kitchen.

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 2 ¾ cups (350g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup (120ml) warm milk (about 110°F or 45°C)
  • 2 tablespoons (30g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Frying:

  • 4 cups (1 liter) vegetable oil or canola oil

For the Sugar Coating:

  • ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, mix warm milk, 1 teaspoon of sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Make the Dough: In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add yeast mixture, melted butter, egg, and vanilla. Knead until smooth (8–10 minutes by hand or 5 minutes in a stand mixer).
  3. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  4. Shape the Donuts: Roll out dough to ½ inch thickness and cut into hearts using a cookie cutter. Let rest for 30 minutes.
  5. Heat the Oil: In a deep fryer or pot, heat oil to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Fry the Donuts: Fry in small batches for 1–2 minutes per side, until golden brown. Drain on a wire rack.
  7. Coat in Sugar: While warm, roll the donuts in granulated sugar for a sweet finish.
  8. Serve and Enjoy: Enjoy fresh, or pair with coffee, hot chocolate, or fruit jam!
