Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour for extra chewiness)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
  • 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)
  • Coarse salt, garlic powder, or Parmesan cheese for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Make the dough: Add flour, salt, and olive oil. Mix until combined, then knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth.
  3. First rise: Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise for about 1 hour until doubled.
  4. Shape into hearts: Punch down the dough, divide it into equal pieces, and roll into 12-inch ropes. Form into heart shapes by bringing the ends together and pinching at the top.
  5. Second rise: Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and let rest for 15–20 minutes.
  6. Brush and top: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush with egg wash or milk and sprinkle with coarse salt or toppings.
  7. Bake: Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden brown. Remove from oven and brush with melted butter if desired.
  8. Serve and enjoy! Pair with marinara sauce, garlic butter, or your favorite dip.
