This Easy Sweet and Sour Chicken recipe brings takeout-style flavor into your kitchen using simple ingredients. Crispy chicken bites are coated in a glossy, tangy-sweet sauce with sautéed bell peppers and served over rice. It’s quick to prepare, family-friendly, and perfect for a weeknight dinner.
Ingredients
- 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken thighs (cut into bite-sized pieces)
- 1 egg (beaten)
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil (plus more for frying)
- 1 red bell pepper (chopped)
- 1 yellow bell pepper (chopped)
- 2 garlic cloves (minced)
- 1/3 cup rice vinegar
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 1/3 cup sugar
- Optional: 1/2 cup pineapple chunks
- Optional: chopped green onions and sesame seeds for garnish
Instructions
- In a bowl, whisk the egg and add the chicken pieces. Mix to coat.
- Sprinkle cornstarch over the chicken and toss until each piece is well coated.
- In another bowl, combine rice vinegar, ketchup, soy sauce, and sugar to make the sauce.
- Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large pan over medium heat. Sauté the bell peppers for 3–4 minutes.
- Add garlic and cook for 1 more minute. Remove veggies from pan and set aside.
- Add more oil to the pan. Cook chicken in batches for 3–4 minutes per side until golden.
- Drain excess oil and return chicken and vegetables to the pan.
- Pour in the sauce and simmer for 3–5 minutes until thick and glossy.
- Garnish with green onions and sesame seeds, if using.
- Serve immediately over steamed rice or noodles.
