  • Author: Sara McKenney

Description

These Classic Cheesy Sloppy Joe Sandwiches are the ultimate comfort food—meaty, cheesy, and deliciously messy. Juicy ground beef simmered in a sweet and tangy sauce is piled onto soft toasted buns, topped with melted cheddar for a satisfying bite every time. Perfect for family dinners, casual parties, or quick weeknight meals.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 preferred)

1 tablespoon olive oil (if needed)

1 small yellow onion finely diced

2 cloves garlic minced

3/4 cup ketchup

1 tablespoon tomato paste

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

2 teaspoons yellow mustard

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)

salt and black pepper to taste

4 brioche or hamburger buns

1 cup sharp cheddar cheese freshly grated

lettuce leaves (optional)

mayonnaise or butter (optional)

Instructions

1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add olive oil if using lean beef, then add ground beef. Cook for 4–5 minutes, breaking it up, until browned. Drain excess grease if needed.

2. Add diced onion and sauté for 2–3 minutes until soft. Stir in garlic and cook for 30 seconds.

3. Lower heat to medium. Add ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, and smoked paprika. Mix well, season with salt and pepper, and let simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened.

4. While the meat simmers, toast your buns using a skillet or toaster with butter or mayo until golden.

5. To assemble, optionally place lettuce on the bottom bun, top with a generous scoop of Sloppy Joe mixture, then cover with grated cheddar cheese. Place the top bun and serve hot.

Notes

Grate cheese fresh—it melts better and tastes richer than pre-shredded varieties.

Always toast your buns to keep them from getting soggy under the filling.

Simmer the mixture fully to help thicken and blend the sauce flavors.
