Ingredients
1 box chocolate cake mix (preferably devil’s food or fudge)
As required on the box: eggs, oil, water
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
1/3 cup evaporated milk (for cake layer)
1/3 cup evaporated milk (for caramel layer)
11 oz caramel bits or wrapped soft caramels, unwrapped
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped pecans
Cooking spray or butter for greasing the pan
Optional: Sea salt flakes for garnish
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
2. Prepare the chocolate cake mix according to package instructions. For added richness, use milk instead of water and add one extra egg.
3. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the caramel bits with 1/3 cup evaporated milk. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth. Set aside.
4. Pour half of the cake batter into the baking pan and bake for 15 minutes.
5. Remove the cake, cool for 5 minutes, then pour the caramel mixture evenly over it.
6. Sprinkle chopped pecans over the caramel layer.
7. Gently spoon the remaining cake batter on top and spread it evenly.
8. Bake for another 25–30 minutes until mostly set but still gooey in the center.
9. Remove and sprinkle chocolate chips on top. Let them melt for 5 minutes, then spread into a smooth layer.
10. Top with additional pecans and optional sea salt. Cool completely before slicing and serving.
Notes
Use toasted pecans for deeper flavor and aroma.
Let the caramel cool for a minute before pouring to avoid thinning the cake base.
Add a teaspoon of coconut oil or butter when melting chocolate for a glossier finish.
